Human blood is made up from liquid and solid components. The liquid part is called plasma, and the solid components include red cells, white cells, and platelets. The platelets are best known for their importance in clotting blood. However, platelets also contain hundreds of proteins called growth factors, which are very important in the healing of injuries. These growth factors stimulate and regenerate aged and damaged skin.
PRP is Platelet Rich Plasma with many more platelets than typically found in blood. The concentration of platelets can be 5 to 10 times greater (or richer) than usual.
To develop a PRP preparation, blood is collected from a patient. The platelets are separated from other blood cells and their concentration is increased during a process called centrifugation. Then the increased concentration of platelets is injected into the treated area.
The result is younger-appearing skin! The effects of the procedure improve for 2 to 3 months and last 1 to 2 years. Some patients require more than one treatment to achieve desired results.
The procedure usually takes 1 hour and includes numbing your face with numbing cream. Possible side effects are similar to what you can have after injecting dermal fillers: redness, tenderness, firmness, swelling, bruising, and discoloration, but all of them have a short duration (less than 7 days).
